Why is there no playoff system in major college football?

Eric Spruill
The Edmond Sun

While high school sports are not perfect, at least they have this one right.

Can you imagine if high school football had its own version of the Bowl Championship Series. It would be an absolute nightmare.

At this point in the season Edmond Memorial and North would already be eliminated from the picture, with a couple of early season losses. Memorial’s losses are by a combined six points, so that would be a joke.

Santa Fe’s strength of schedule would have taken a hit because it ventured out of the OSSAA, to play KC Rockhurst, or would it? Voters could swing either way. They could go by the Hawklet’s history, or they could go off of their 6-3 season from a year ago.

If OCS lost again, who knows?

Deer Creek would be in a good position right now, because its only loss is to one of the state’s best teams.

Wouldn’t this be a terrible scenario?

This is what teams like Texas and Wisconsin face.

Sure, Texas can still make it to a BCS bowl, not that I really believe that, but if they happened to win the Big 12 title, they would be there.

Texas dropped from No. 4 to No. 7, and deservedly so, after their less than stellar performance against Arkansas State. But since when should a team be punished for a win?

Wisconsin and Ohio State faced similar drops in the polls after bad performances, but how much was that affected by Michigan’s recent collapse?

The thing that upsets me the most is ESPN.

It’s the station I watch non-stop because I just can’t get enough college football, but the way they rank conferences is beyond me.

They had the SEC and PAC-10, one and two. Not much of an argument there. But, don’t feed me this garbage that Oregon’s 39-7 win over Michigan was huge.

Michigan is a team that has lost three of its last four games, going back to last year.

And don’t act like Ohio State’s win over Washington was that impressive either.

Washington has never proved to be better than mediocre under Tyrone Willingham.

The PAC-10 will always be Southern Cal and the nine dwarfs. These pansies don’t even play a conference championship game.

It’s sad that ESPN’s Gameday trio of Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso and Chris Fowler, influence so many voters.

Herbsteit announced to the college football world on Saturday night that USC had proven its No. 1 ranking with the win over Nebraska.

If Southern Cal had beaten Nebraska 49-31 at Memorial Stadium in 1998, then I would agree that they are for real. But beating a team coached by Bill Callahan, that since his arrival has never proved itself to be among the elite teams, how is this a big win?

Heck, one of Nebraska’s biggest games in conference play will be against Oklahoma State, the team that travelled to Troy State and lost. If you’re a program on the rise, how do you justify signing a home-and-home contract with these Trojans? I’m not knocking on OSU, but just the fact that they travelled to Troy, Alabama, for a game is embarrassing enough. Not to mention getting blown out by them.

Anyway, who cares? Lets just ditch this madness, and go to a playoff system. The NCAA would still be raking in the money, football fans would get a few extra games, and college football would finally have a true national champion. One that is not based on the opionion of the “East Coast Trio.”
