Wolves take on Patriots
Eric Spruill
The Edmond Sun
Last week Santa Fe took all the suspense out of the city championship, with its 21-12 win over Memorial.
And tonight, the No. 7-ranked Wolves should get a bit of a breather —they host 0-2 Putnam City West, who has been outscored 74-19 — as they begin to gear up for district play.
The Patriots do have some firepower, though, and just because they are winless, doesn’t mean they won’t put up a fight.
Special teams miscues cost the PC West last week in it’s game against Yukon — a 29-12 loss — in which the Patriot’s led 12-0. Quarterback Daniel Farrow scored two touchdowns in the game and racked up close to 250 total yards.
In the last three meetings, Santa Fe’s largest win over the Patriots is last year’s 28-16 victory. The other two were decided by a touchdown. And if you’re still not convinced, Santa Fe’s 2003 state runner-up squad escaped with a 28-21 win.
Santa Fe is undefeated on the year and has looked dominant on both sides of the ball.
Michael Hodges has passed for 459 yards and three scores, with Alex Hill on the receiving end of two scores, with five receptions for 189 yards.
Santa Fe’s Randy Ponder and Steven Sumpter have combined for 312 yards and four scores.
The Wolves have been great on the defensive side of the ball. Sumpter and Willie Okwounu each have three interceptions, while Daeshon Bufford has four tackles for loss on the defensive line.
Johnathan Allen and Michael Harris have also emerged as quality linebackers for the Wolves. Harris has 14 tackles on the year, while Allen came up with some crucial stops against Memorial last week, including a sack in the fourth quarter that stalled a Bulldog drive.
This will be Santa Fe’s third time in as many weeks to play at Wantland Stadium, though on paper, it is the Wolves’ first home contest. Kick off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
