Bombers and Wolves get no love in the polls

Strictly my opinion

Eric Spruill
The Edmond Sun

By now the rest of the state is starting to catch on that Broken Arrow is pretty darn good. With wins over Union, Owasso and 5A’s No. 2-ranked Booker T. Washington, the Tigers (3-0) are the top rated team in 6A, edging out Norman North.

Cale Fulps, who won the Top Gun Quarterback Challenge on both the state and national levels has completed 41-of-61 passes for 435 yards and four scores, while running back Steven Hooper has 415 yards rushing in the Tigers’ balanced offensive attack.

You can say Norman North all you want, but what about the Bombers of Midwest City. I’m going to steal a line from late-great Rodney Dangerfield, and say, no respect.

Coming in fifth, behind Union and Jenks are the Bombers. Undefeated, and absolutely for real. All Midwest City has done is beat Moore 69-3, a game in which all of its points came in the first half, and beat Southmoore 59-28.

And that’s who Memorial faces this week, after a last-second win at Del City.

In sixth, and also a bit underrated is Santa Fe. The Wolves wrapped up the city championship two weeks ago, then thumped Putnam City West 56-0 on Friday night.

Putnam North is seventh, followed by Enid, Muskogee, and Mustang.

Memorial (2-1) didn’t receive any votes in the polls, and actually dropped after its win over Southmoore in week 1. To make matters even more confusing, Edmond North (0-3) is on the verge of cracking into the polls at No. 13, receiving two votes.

Guthrie is the unanimous choice in 5A, after Tulsa Washington’s loss to Broken Arrow, taking nine of the 10 first-place votes. In another surprising move, Shawnee dropped in the polls to No. 6, after winning. Carl Albert, who got off to a shaky start has taken over at No. 5. Bixby (1-2) is No. 9.

Glenpool is No. 1 in 4A, McGuinness (1-2) is tied for fourth, while Wagoner dropped to No. 8 after its second loss on the season.

And there’s a new No. 1 in 3A. That spot belongs to the reigning 2A state champion Cascia Hall, after class 2A’s No. 2-ranked Chandler upset Clinton 20-14.

Tuttle comes in at No. 2.

Heritage Hall is still the team to beat in 2A, despite Chandler’s amazing feat, edging out the Lions with eight first place votes.
