Freshmen 'Dogs beat up on Southmoore
The Edmond Sun
The Edmond Memorial freshmen football team used a 46-yard touchdown run by Davis Smith to grab the lead against Southmoore, and let the defense do the rest. Memorial came up with a number of big stops in the second half, including a pair of interceptions to seal the 12-7 win over the Sabercats.
The ‘Dogs started out in the hole by fumbling the opening kickoff, giving Southmoore the ball on their own 33-yard line. Southmoore quickly found the end zone, scoring four plays later to make it a 7-0 game.
Memorial got their offense rolling when Ry Huff helped convert a third-and-10 from their own 25-yard line when he hit Dalton Dunlap on a 40-yard pass. The two hooked up again for a 22-yard gain on a third-and-seven on the Sabercat 32-yard line.
Huff then put the ‘Dogs on the board when he punched it in from one-yard out. But they failed to take the lead with a two-point conversion, when a pass to Dalton Cooper was batted away at the last second, making it a 7-6 game.
The Sabercats looked to add to that lead when they recovered a muffed punt return at midfield. Southmoore marched down inside the Memorial 10-yard line, but the ‘Dogs defense stiffened and Southmoore turned it over on downs.
Memorial’s defense again came up big, forcing a three-and-out for the Sabercats. Then the ‘Dogs offense got back to work. Huff broke a 14-yard run that put the ball inside Southmoore territory. Smith took the next handoff to the right and reversed field to score on a 46-yard run. The ‘Dogs two-point try again came up empty, making it a 12-7 game.
Matt Hickman and John Teeters each grabbed an interception as the ‘Dogs came away with another road victory.
