North wins 31-10 in wild game

Edmond North earned its first win of the season in the district opener against Lawton Eisenhower, in a game where the Eagles turned the ball over on its first five possessions, giving the Huskies a 31-10 win at Wantland Stadium on Friday night.

The Eagles (1-3, 0-1) finished the game with seven turnovers — five fumbles, two interceptions — not including a bad snap on a punt which gave North prime field position.

“I’ve never been involved in a game where one team turned the ball over that many times,” North head coach Jeremy Dombek said. “It’s great because we needed breaks, we were in such a funk, we couldn’t get anything to go our way. It feels great, because wins are hard to come by right now.”

And to top off the wacky night, North offensive lineman Bradley Wilcox was on the receiving end of a tipped pass in which he caught and rumbled in for a six-yard touchdown in the third quarter, giving North a 31-3 lead.

“It’s a big boy’s dream, I don’t know how many times I’ve thought about that and it finally happened,” Wilcox said.

North (1-3, 1-0) wasn’t exactly free of mistakes either, with one interception, two fumbles and a blocked punt. But, North’s offensive line was great on the night, clearing big holes for Quadon Henderson and Joe Aska.

Aska went for 179 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown, while Henderson had eight carries for 55 yards and a score.

The Huskies unleashed a 12-play, 76 yard drive to start the game, with Henderson scoring from 12 yards out, giving the Huskies a 7-0 lead with 7:49 left in the first.

Early in the second quarter, North went 57 yards in three plays, all of which was Aska. The tailback had runs of 38, 9-yards, with a 10 yard touchdown capping off the drive. On the Huskies next possession quarterback Cody Crabaugh ran for a 14-yard score, making it 21-0.

“We had a great game plan, we’ve got to keep doing that and do the same thing again next week,” Aska said.

Lawton Ike would score with eight seconds left before halftime, as Colton Rancourt booted a 25-yard field goal.

North kicker Chase Funderburk kicked a 28-yard field goal, followed by Wilcox’s touchdown, rounded out the scoring for North.

“It was a great night, everyone came together, we were actually a team tonight,” Wilcox said.

“You’ve got to get off on the right foot, we’ve got such a bad taste in our mouth after the first couple of weeks, it just seems like it’s gone now,” Dombek said. “We can’t do anything about what happened the first three weeks, but it’s where you stand in week 11 that counts.”
