Bombers blitz Memorial, 34-6
Jeff Harrison

MIDWEST CITY — Edmond Memorial knew what it was in for Friday night when they opened district play against No. 2-ranked Midwest City. The 'Dogs immediately proved they were up for the task with gritty first half performance, but the Bombers went on to score 21 unanswered points in the second half for a 34-6 victory Friday night.
"We just didn't finish tonight and you can't do that against a good team like that, that's just simple enough, " Memorial coach Mark Walker said. “There's no one to blame but us, and we just need to get better for next week.”
Memorial had a tough time catching up with Midwest City tailback Timothy Flanders. The senior finished the night with 185 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.
So far this season, Midwest City has had its way with teams in the first half. That was not the case with the 'Dogs, who kept the Bombers out of the end zone for much of the first half.
The Bombers drove deep into Memorial territory on their first two possessions of the game, but the 'Dogs defense held them to a four-and-out, and an unsuccessful 28-yard field goal attempt.
The Midwest City defense made their share of big plays. The Bombers forced four turnovers in game, including a fumble recovery in the second quarter that set up a 59-yard touchdown run by Antonio Brown, making it a 7-0 game.
The 'Dogs then answered back with a 95-yard scoring drive at the end of the second quarter. Kameron Doolittle put the 'Dogs only points on the board when he made a spectacular grab in the right corner of the end zone. A missed extra point attempt made it a 7-6 contest.
Midwest City appeared to have six more when Flanders returned the ensuing kickoff 95-yards, but a penalty brought the ball back to the Memorial 48-yard line. That proved to be a minor setback, as the Bombers only needed four plays to find the end on a 10-yard run by Flanders with 57 seconds left in the half.
After a tight first half, the Bombers took their opening second half drive 80 yards for the score. Jase Chilcoat capped the drive with a one-yard quarterback sneak.
Midwest City later blocked Will Connant's 28-yard field goal try, and ran it back 75-yards for a score. Flanders also scored on a 67-yard run to make it a 34-6 game early with 10:14 left in the game.
Doolittle finished the game 93 yards of offense. The sophomore caught three passes for 50 yards and score, while also rushing for 43 yards on eight carries. Shandrell Henderson led the 'Dogs in rushing with 79 yards on two carries.
Blake Umberham completed 13-of-29 attempts for 204 yards and one touchdown and three interceptions.
Memorial will look to rebound from the loss next week when they take on Putnam City West.
