Norman ends season for Lady 'Dogs

MOORE — The Memorial softball season came to a close on Wednesday with a 2-1 loss to Norman in the regional tournament.

“It was pretty much a typical game for us. They got key hits when they needed them, and we didn’t,” Memorial head coach Janet Chartney said. “Our top three hitters get our four hits, and our other six go O-for.”

The loss gave Chartney her first losing season since she took the position.

“As far as girl’s go, I wouldn’t trade any of them for anybody else, but as far as winning goes, we didn’t have a good record,” Chartney said. “But 11 times we faced either the Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 7 ranked teams in the state, which is awful tough.”

In the third inning, following base hits by Allison Widener, Tori Walker and Melanie Easley, Lauren Tyndall hit a fly ball to score Walker, giving Memorial its only run of the game.

Norman, who the Lady Bulldogs beat on Tuesday, roared back in the fourth with a lead-off double, followed by a triple to score its first run. The Lady Tigers would score the winning run in the same inning off a Memorial throwing error.

Memorial left six runners stranded throughout the contest. The Lady ‘Dogs gave up just five hits in the contest.

Memorial loses three seniors, with Easley, Walker and Widener all being seniors.

“These are three of the better seniors I’ve ever had come through here. They were all leaders, and did a tremendous job of leading our team. If the younger players didn’t learn anything from these girls it was because they didn’t want to, or they just didn’t watch them,” Chartney said.
