Broken Arrow edges North boys for 6A crown

Kent Douglas thought his team had as good of shot as any at the wide open Class 6A boys’ state cross country meet. But the Edmond North boys came up a bit short as Broken Arrow pulled out a stunning state title.

“Broken Arrow came on the second half the season just tremendous, they had just been running great, we knew it was going to be tough,” Douglas said. “The guys ran great, we just came up a little short, but second is a tremendous accomplishment.”

Broken Arrow, which placed second at regionals, took the 6A title with 86 points. The Huskies finished second with 112 points, Tulsa Union beat out Memorial by just two points for third, while Santa Fe was seventh with 182.

“It didn’t end like we wanted to, but you have to give a tip of the hat to Broke Arrow,” Memorial coach David Sammons said. “I don’t think they’d won a meet all year and they come in here and win this.”

Ponca City’s Victor Others claimed the individual 6A boys title, finishing the 5k course in 16:09.

North senior Adam Godwin closed out his high school career in style, taking fifth with a time of 16:28. It was the second all-state finish for Godwin, who was fourth at state a year ago.

“It wasn’t my best, but I though I did pretty good,” Godwin said. “I felt good at the beginning, but again the end just killed.”

North also had a pair of runners earn all-state honorable mention accolades. P.J. Osborn clocked a time of 16:51, which was good for 11th, while senior Dylan Crawford wrapped up his high school career with a 15th place finish (16:57). Austin Mayers finished 44th (17:47), while senior Matt Hobbs was 49th (17:51).

“Those seniors set the gauntlet for us this year, they gave us great senior leadership, all three will go off to college and be successful,” Douglas said. “We had a good year, I’m very pleased with my boys. We were conference champs, regional champs and state runner-up in 6A in Oklahoma, that’s a great accomplishment.”

Alex Shook paced the Bulldogs with an impressive time of 16:49. The freshman earned all-state honors with the 10th place finish. Senior Eric Talbert was next for Memorial, grabbing a 17th place finish (17:03). Garrett Horn came in 30th (17:26), Geoffrey Johnson was 53rd (17:53) and Hayden Fox finished 58th (18:00).

“The amount of illness we’ve had you’d have thought it was January or February, I think there was only three meets when we ran the same seven on our varsity, but the guys did a good job today,” Sammons said.

The Wolves were led by sophomore Arya Bahreini, who used a last second burst to secure all-state honors. Bahreini finished his second state meet in 14th place with a time of 16:56.

“I was trying to aim for top 15 and when I saw those two guys pass me I couldn’t let them do it, I had to get top 15, I worked too hard,” Bahreini said.

Alex Skinner was next for Santa Fe in 36th (17:31), Brad Cameron took 46th (17:49), Tanner Bailey finished 54th (17:55) and Lance Russell rounded out the team scoring in 56th place (17:58).

“We ran well today and unfortunately so did everybody else,” Santa Fe coach Steven Herron said. “I didn’t have anyone run slow, I’m happy with how we ran, but I’m not happy with how we finished. These are some schools that we’ve been running against that haven’t done that well. I think everyone is shocked by Broken Arrow.”
