Huskies looking for upset in Lawton

Edmond North head coach Jeremy Dombek has a lot of things to be happy about as his team heads down to No. 8 Lawton tonight for the first round of the state playoffs.

His team is finally getting healthy. And it appears they didn’t miss a beat after having several key guys missing games due to injury. He also likes how the Huskies match up with the Wolverines.

“It’s a very good matchup. They do some things offensively, that we really haven’t seen this year. They are a pass-heavy team, they throw it about 58-56 percent of the time, and they do a good job of getting the ball to players in space, which we like, because our athletes are back there as well,” Dombek said.

The Huskies (8-2) went through some injuries, and though not fully recovered, his players are back on the field and producing.

Quarterback Travis Townsend had his highest offensive output last week in a 43-0 win over Westmoore. The junior threw for 180 yards, despite having some lingering pain in his ankle.

And they were able to run the ball at will on the Jaguars, while picking up their first shutout of the season.

“It was by far our best performance of the season in all three phases of the game. After evaluating the tape, we made plays on offense, defense and on special teams,” Dombek said. “It helped a lot having Tyler Goodrich back on the offensive line at right guard.”

Joe Aska topped the 1000-yard mark last week and has rushed for 14 touchdowns on the year.

When Lawton runs the ball, they do it mostly with the zone read. And Charles Smith has been their go-to guy all year, rushing for 830 yards and three scores.

Junior quarterback Cody Miller has had an outstanding year for the Wolverines, passing for 1,694 yards and 17 touchdowns. He has thrown just seven picks. Tyrequek Zimmerman has been Lawton’s top receiver on the year, where he has amassed 755 yards and 10 touchdowns, at nearly 18 yards a reception.

“They are a very good team. The two teams they lost to are very comparable to the teams we lost to. Del City and Southmoore, are a lot like Edmond Memorial and Midwest City,” Dombek said. “Great quarterback, great receivers, and their defensive ends are great players. Good speed on both sides of the ball.”

Lawton (8-2) ended its regular season with three straight wins, defeating Santa Fe, PC North and Norman North, while averaging over 30 points a game.

“It’s going to be a challenge, but at the same time we’ve played down there, so we’ll be famaliar with that environment. It’s going to be a great game, against two similarly matched football teams,” the head coach said.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 at Cameron Stadium.
