It didn’t take the Deer Creek girls long to post their first victory under new head coach Totsy Manning. The Lady Antlers rallied from a six-point deficit late in fourth quarter to edge Shawnee 31-28 Tuesday night at Deer Creek High School.
“It was first game jitters, but we played solid defense for four quarters,” Manning said. “ We limited our turnovers and hit some big free throws late in the game. I was pleased with our effort.”
Mustang transfer A.J. Miller led the Lady Antlers with 10 points, while Kelsey Glover and Jasey Jackson added eight apiece.
The Deer Creek boys did not enjoy success in their showdown with the Shawnee. Delino Graham and Cody Stanford combined to score 43 points to lead the Wolves to an 83-68 victory Tuesday night.
Deer Creek led by three points after one quarter of play, but the Wolves answered in the second quarter to take a 42-38 lead at the break.
The Antlers struggled to put points on the board in the second half, and the Wolves ran away with it.
Adam Byrd led the Antlers with 17 points, Hayden Wagoner finished with 13 and Chase Almen chipped in nine.
The Deer Creek squads will have a week to rest up before a tough road trip to Carl Albert on Tuesday night. The Carl Albert girls’ team is ranked second in the Class 5A coaches poll, while the boys are ranked third.
