Huskies rally past Wolves

EDMOND — An early deficit wasn’t enough to trip up the Edmond North boy’s soccer team on Tuesday night. The No. 7-ranked Huskies trailed 1-0 early in the first half, but reeled off a three straight scores for a 3-1 Edlam win over defending state champion Santa Fe at home.

“That kind of lit the guys’ fire a bit and realized we had to get in this game and put three in the back of the net quickly,” North coach Chris Waugh said. “Sometimes these guys just need something to ignite them.”

Senior Ian Sanders scored two goals to lead the way for the Huskies.

Michael Shanahan put the No. 9 Wolves on the board first when he found the back of the net on a penalty kick just over 12 minutes into the game.

But the Wolves’ lead was short lived as North got on the board just over two minutes later off a throw in. Sanders fought through a crowd in front of the south goal and slipped the ball in to tie the game 1-1 with 27:35 in the half.

“We just wanted to bounce back from that loss to Memorial,” Sanders said. “We knew right when we got scored on first we knew we had to get a real quick response.”

The Huskies soon vaulted in front with a pair of scores in the final 10 minutes of the first half. Sanders put North on top 2-1 when he scored his fifth goal of the year off a penalty kick with 9:18 left in the half. That lead soon grew to 3-1 on a goal by Will Senat with just 3:25.

North looked to keep the momentum going in the second half as they saw a an early shot bounce off the goal post. But that seemed to be the last of the excitement as neither team could muster any offense the rest of the way.

“I definitely wanted to see more in the second half,” Waugh said. “I thought we had it when we hit the cross bar in the first five minutes. We did some nice combinations and then the game just fizzled out. I don’t know what happened, but both teams were just playing very laid back in the second half.”

North is back at home Thursday night against Deer Creek. Santa Fe is off until the Mustang Bronco Cup on March 25.
