EDMOND —
The Edmond North Lady Huskies claimed their second straight state swimming championship, scoring well in every event and breaking five school records, Saturday afternoon at the Class 6A swimming championships at Oklahoma City Community College.
North scored 347 points to 262 for runner-up Jenks. The Memorial girls finished fifth with 172 points, while Santa Fe scored 56 points, which placed 14th. Ally Robertson won her first state title for the Lady Huskies as the freshman took the 200 Individual Medley. She then swam with Amanda Greenlee, Jess Graro and Abbie Imes in winning the 200 Medley Relay, and with Imes, Megan Snelling and Ann-Marie Stowe in taking the 200 Free Relay.
For Memorial, Annah Baykal finished as state runner-up in the 100 Breaststroke, while Sara Riggs was the top scorer for Santa Fe as she finished 11th in the 200 Free and 500 Free.
The boys meet came down to the last relay, with the North boys finishing with 238 points which placed them third behind Union with 267 and Bartlesville with 243. Memorial scored 164 points for a seventh-place finish, while Santa Fe scored 73 points and finished 11th.
Naresh Naik from Memorial was a state champion as he won the 100 Free for the Bulldogs. The top placer for North was the 200 Medley Relay team of Riley Fant, Dylan Anderson, Sean Simpson and Garrett Duncan, which finished second. For Santa Fe, Brandon Le broke his own school record as he finished fourth in the 100 Butterfly.
“It was another great state meet for the Edmond teams,” said coach Steve Riggs. “The North girls were dominant with balanced scoring in every event. After winning last year they knew what it would take to defend their title and they looked like a very confident team. I am also very proud of the Memorial and Santa Fe girls. This state meet was much harder than the past couple of years, but they swam well and finished with some great times and a lot of excitement for the future!”
“In the boys meet there were several ways that things could go,” Riggs said. “The North boys swam well and took care of their part. They knew that every point could be the difference between first and fourth. For Memorial, Naresh has been the fastest 100 freestyler all year and his title was a reflection of how hard he works every day. The Santa Fe boys had no seniors swimming so they will just keep getting stronger. I am very thankful to God for allowing me to get to coach these fine young men and women. It was another ‘Edmond Day’ at the pool!”
