EDMOND — Yukon had Edmond North on the ropes late. But it was the Huskies who delivered the knockout punch.

After seeing the Millers steal the momentum with an incredible touchdown pass and clutch interception, the Huskies climbed back with big plays of their own for a 41-33 comeback victory at Wantland Stadium.

“We knew they were going to play us extremely tough, they do it every year, and I’m just glad our kids found a way to win,” North coach Jeremy Dombek said. “And sometimes you have to do that.”

Trailing 33-24, the Huskies defense dialed up the pressure on Yukon quarterback Hayden Somerville. A lineman stripped the ball from his hand, and recovered it on the Miller 24. Michael Farmer later scored on a nine-yard run to make it a 33-31 contest.

The Huskies again brought pressure up front, which led to a blocked punt deep inside Miller territory. While they couldn’t put the ball in the end zone, Branden Moore made sure North did not come away empty-handed. The junior kicker gave his team the lead with a 24-yard field goal with 6:29 left.

And an interception finally sealed the deal. Andrew Dixon picked off a Somerville pass, and Marque Depp later scored from 10 yards out to make it a 41-33 final.

“We just never had a sense of panic,” Dombek said. “And I kept telling the players if we’re a great team then we’ll find a way to win and we did.”

The comeback victory keeps the Huskies tied with Norman North atop of District 6A-3. The two will meet Thursday in Norman.

Somerville finished the game with 355 yards passing and five touchdowns. After a fast start, he was just 6-of-17 for 122 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the second half.

Hoskins was 14-of-26 for 206 yards and two interceptions. Farmer and Depp combined to rush for 163 yards and three touchdowns.

The game had the feel of a shootout from the start.

Yukon struck first when Somerville converted a third-down pass to A.J. West for a 13-yard score at the 7:08 mark in the first quarter.

North answered with a three-yard touchdown run by Farmer. After forcing a rare punt, the Huskies pulled ahead 14-7 on a six-yard run by Jarech Page with 2:32 in the first.

But the Millers wouldn’t stay down for long. Somerville hit Tyler Tredway for a 43-yard touchdown play with 38 seconds in the first. A North fumble then led to another Somerville touchdown pass. Yukon missed the extra point to make it a 20-14 contest with 11:10 in the second.

Hoskins later showed his mobility, as he rolled left and hit Luke Rossi in the corner of the end zone at the 8:44 mark.

Somerville again brought the Millers back before the half. The junior hit Parker Bohannon on a 28-yard strike. He was then sacked on a two-point conversion attempt, making it a 26-21 game at the break.

North came out strong in its opening drive of the second half. Hoskins hit his first three passes of the third, but the drive stalled on the Yukon 4. Moore hit a 20-yard field goal, pulling North within two at 26-24.

But that’s when things started to slip for the Huskies. They looked out of sync on offense and couldn’t catch a break on defense.

Backed up deep inside their own end zone, the Millers found some magic. Somerville scrambled to his right and heaved the ball toward a receiver at midfield. A North defender and a Yukon receiver each deflected the ball, before it miraculously landed in the hands of Yukon’s Codey Sanchez who sprinted untouched for a 94-yard score. The wild play put Yukon on top 33-24 with 3:12, and looked like the last blow for the Huskies.

Instead of backing down, they regrouped for the comeback victory.
