Mustang quarterback Chandler Garrett found a few holes in the Edmond Santa Fe defense. But each time the sophomore got the Broncos into scoring position, those holes simply disappeared.
The Wolves defense delivered clutch play after clutch play Thursday night in a 26-14 homecoming win over Mustang at Wantland Stadium.
The Broncos racked up nearly 400 yards of offense but only twice put the ball in the end zone.
Santa Fe forced four turnovers deep inside their own territory, while holding the Broncos scoreless in three other trips to the red zone.
“There was no doubt in any of our minds that this was going to be a dog fight,” Santa Fe coach Lance Manning said. “We talk about being an efficient and opportunistic team and for the most part we were tonight. We forced some timely turnovers, and when we needed something offensively, we went and got it.”
Justice Hansen accounted for all four of Santa Fe’s scores. He finished the night 17-of-25 for 207 yards with one touchdown, while running for another 64 yards and three scores.
Malik Earl finished with seven catches for 88 yards while Maclom Dade had the lone receiving touchdown.
The Broncos (3-2, 1-1) found success moving the ball through the air. Garrett completed 26-of-33 passes for 300 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Colton Hadlock led the way receiving with 7 catches for 84 yards and one TD.
Mustang struck first with a quick scoring drive in the first quarter. Garrett put the Broncos in the end zone on their possession, hitting A.J. Breasette on a 19-yard strike.
Santa Fe (4-1, 2-0) responded with a quick strike of their own. Three plays later, Hansen hit a streaking Malcolm Dade for a 76-yard score. A missed extra point made it a 7-6 score with 6:35 in the first quarter.
After getting some big defensive stops, the Wolves pulled in front midway through the second quarter. Hansen hit Malik Earl on a 39-yard pass, and later took it himself from eight yards out.
Edward Smith’s extra point put the Wolves in front 13-7 at the break.
Hansen ran for two more scores in the second half, but Mustang never quit. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Garrett found Hadlock for a 24-yard score, making it a 20-14 game.
The Broncos again knocked on the door in the final minutes of the game. On a fourth-and-goal play from the Santa Fe 10, Garrett hit Hadlock across the middle, but the receiver was dragged down just shy of the goal line.
The Wolves will be back at home next Thursday to take on Putnam City West.
