The Edmond Santa Fe volleyball team owns several wins against rival North. But they picked up a huge one Saturday night.
The top-ranked Lady Wolves defeated No. 2 North in straight sets to win the Class 6A state championship at Bixby High School. Santa Fe won the all-Edmond finals, 25-18, 25-18, 25-18.
“We knew it was going to be a war, and we knew if didn’t play our absolute best it was going to be tough to win,” Santa Fe coach Will Ethridge said. “I’m just so excited for these girls to win it.”
The state championship was the fifth for Santa Fe. The Lady Wolves last won state in 2004. They last made the state finals in 2010, falling to Memorial.
“This is so surreal for our team,” senior Bailey Otto said. “I know it’s cliché to say but we really are like a family. For us, it’s about playing for the person next to you. We fought hard and I’m just super excited.”
Santa Fe finished the season with a 36-1 record. Their only loss was to North in August at the Tulsa Union Tournament.
After controlling the first set, Santa Fe fell behind early in the second. The Lady Wolves reeled off seven straight points and pulled out the 25-18 win. Santa Fe never trailed in the third.
“I don’t want to take anything away from them (North) but we were just hitting on all cylinders,” Ethridge said.
The Lady Huskies advanced to the finals with a five-set victory over defending champion Bishop Kelley (25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 24-26, 15-12) on Saturday afternoon.
North coach Kimo Aweau said his girls played exceptionally well against Bishop Kelley but couldn’t keep it up against Santa Fe.
“Our girls shouldn’t hang their heads because they played a great tournament and it was a very successful season,” he said. “I think we had too many service errors and didn’t execute as well as we did in the semifinal.”
North last made it to the state finals in 2011, falling to Bishop Kelley. The Lady Huskies finished the year with a 29-4 record. All four losses came against Santa Fe.
Santa Fe breezed past Jenks in the semifinals (25-23, 25-19, 25-19). They swept Stillwater on Friday.
Six Edmond players were selected to the all-state tournament team. Jordan Spence (Santa Fe), Samantha Ethridge (Santa Fe), Rachel Manriquez (North), Hannah Frohling (North) and Livi Schriffner (Memorial) were selected to the team. Santa Fe’s Bailey Otto was named the MVP.
