Edmond Memorial distance ace Chris Ebert lost his ongoing battle with old rival Ben Barrett of Norman North, but the Bulldogs won the war, coasting easily to the team championship at the Class 6A Cross Country Regional qualifying meet in Norman Saturday.
Memorial boys and girls as well as both squads from North and Santa Fe also qualified for the OSSAA State Championships to be hosted by Santa Fe this Saturday.
Ebert ran the 5K race in 16:17 behind Barrett’s 15:53, but will have a chance for revenge Saturday at state. Ebert was joined by teammates Gabe Thompson in third place at 16:28 and ninth-placer Ryan Nielson in 16:49 in the top 10. Also scoring points for the Bulldogs were Harrison Pierce in 12th at 17.03 and Zach Mauck in 18th place.
Also representing the Bulldogs at state will be David Lytle and Grey Howard.
THE LADY BULLDOGS place second
In the team race, host Norman North finished 1-2-3-7-11 to take top team and individual honors. Edmond Memorial, paced by Jaclyn Hummel and Clara O’Conner, finished well ahead of third-place Mustang.
Hummel was ninth with a time of 11:54 for the 3200 meter course while O’Conner was right behind in 10th with a time of 12:07. Also scoring points for the Lady Bulldogs were Arin Glennie, Lana Duke and Tess O’Conner, while Jennifer Chapman and Amber Covin will also run at state with the Lady Bulldogs.
The Edmond Santa Fe boys placed fifth in regionals and the Lady Wolves were sixth to qualify for the state meet they will host Saturday.
For the Wolves, the top runner was Neil Knight with a time of 16:55, good for 11th place. Teammates Christian Powell, Colton Pearson, Mason Case and Stephen Snider contributed to the score and Drew Markwell and Keegan Copelin round out the Santa Fe squad.
The Lady Wolves were paced by Madison Foreman in 18th place in the team competition. Also on the scoring squad were Allison Tompkins, Karli Hamman, Joelle Glimp and Ashley Sassenrath. Victoria Walter and Julia Tang round out the squad.
The Edmond North Lady Huskies placed fourth in the team scoring led boy Jaci Smith, who finished fourth behind the three Norman North runners. Her time was 11:35, just .09 out of first place.
The Edmond North boys placed sixth with Blake Crouch cracking the top 10 in eighth place with a time of 16:45.
Joining Smith were Jenny Mehner in eighth place with a time of 11:54, along with Emma Ledbetter in 12th, Kaitlyn Berchman and Julia Shepherd. Also, Reilly Emerson and Abby Cosby will be making the trip to state for the Lady Huskies.
For the boys, Tyler Francis finished in the 13 spot behind Crouch, joined by David Crawford, Jared Ashman and Zach Verda, along with Trace Maddox and Jacob Darnell.
