OKLAHOMA CITY —
The Deer Creek Antlers took a 7-5 defeat at the hands of Chickasha Friday afternoon in the Class 5A state semifinals at Hall of Fame Stadium.
The Antlers got in a hole early, as they allowed five runs in the first three innings without scoring any of their own. Deer Creek chipped away with one run in the fourth inning, but it was in the bottom of the seventh when they seemed to catch lightning in a bottle when, with one out, Haley Wells reached on an error as Chickasha’s pitcher and first baseman collided on what looked to be a routine pop-up.
Then Tori Bennett singled, and after Haley Goodin hit a big fly ball that was reeled in by the Chicks’ center fielder, Meagan Thompson singled past the shortstop to load the bases.
Jordan Williams and Bailey Thompson hit back-to-back singles that scored Wells and Bennett. Hope Martin then sent a line drive triple into left field that scored Williams and Thompson to put the Antlers down only 7-5.
With Martin on third base, that brought to the plate the potential tying run in the form of pitcher Emily Watson.
Watson took a ball and fouled off three pitches, but was called out on strikes to end the game.
Chickasha advances to face Grove in the Class 5A championship game. Deer Creek’s season ends at 26-9.
After the game, Antlers coach Erin Regier and her assistants gathered the team beyond the outfield fence.
“I just told them that something like this is going to build character, and they might not be able to see what that is right now, but all things happen for a reason,” Regier said. “Some days it’s your day and some days it isn’t.”
Deer Creek went into the final inning believing they could win, Regier said.
“We were able to have the top of our order up and they’ve been successful all year,” she said.
“I just felt like all year long, we’ve been able to come from behind. They have a never say die attitude and they proved it there at the very end. We’ve always told them never to give up on themselves, and they don’t.”
Tessa Gipson started the game for Deer Creek and gave up five runs, but only one was earned as the Antlers committed six errors in the field on the day. Gipson allowed only one hit and two walks, and struck out three in two innings of work.
Watson came on in relief in the third inning. She struck out five and allowed three hits, no walks and two runs, both earned.
Jordan Williams had two runs scored, Martin had two RBIs and Wells was 2-for-4 with a run to lead Deer Creek at the plate.
