Memorial looks to bounce back in American Legion AAA Zone Tournament
The wait is finally over for the Edmond Memorial baseball team. The Bulldogs, who haven’t seen action since making an early exit in the Pure Prairie League Tournament last week, will get their chance tonight when they head to Santa Fe High School for the American Legion AAA zone tournament.
“That was very disappointing for us,” Memorial coach Cody White said about the ‘Dogs’ poor showing in the Pure Prairie League Tournament. “We just weren’t hot at the right time, we were slumping and just didn’t hit the ball well. I thought we had a good shot at winning the tournament, but it just didn’t happen.”
The Memorial boys earned the top seed in the Pure Praire League Tournament, but they were eliminated after losing their first two games. Meanwhile, rivals North and Santa Fe enjoyed more fruitful showings, with the Wolves advancing to the semifinals and the Huskies falling in the championship.
As the host team for next week’s American Legion State Tournament, the ‘Dogs already have an automatic bid, but White doesn't expect that to hamper his team's start Friday night.
“It’s good situation to be in, the zone tournament is good chance to get back on track,” White said. “It’s a good chance to set the tempo for next two weeks. We’ll need to play like there’s no tomorrow even though we’re already in it.”
Memorial has shined this summer with the help of a solid pitching staff and a potent line that features Grant Bohuslavicky, Drew Dahlberg and Trey Reynolds.
"Grant has really done a great job for us, he’s hit the ball well and he makes things happen for us," White said. “Dahlberg is a great leadoff for us, he sets the tone and Trey Reynolds has been hitting really well in the four-hole."
Santa Fe and the OKC Broncos are also in the three-team zone tournament. Those two squads will start things off at 6 p.m. The winner of that game will then take on the 'Dogs at 8:30 p.m.
The double elimination tournament resumes play Saturday, with an if necessary game slotted for 2 p.m. Sunday.
The winner of the zone will move on to the state tournament. If the 'Dogs win the tournament, the second place team will also advance.
