UCO picked low in MIAA football poll

Special to The Sun

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Central Oklahoma is tabbed for a low finish in the 2013 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association football race, according to two pre-season polls released during the league's annual Football Media Day Monday.

The Bronchos, who return 14 starters and 16 other letterman from last year’s 2-8 team, were picked 10th by the coaches and 11th by the media in the 14-team conference. UCO tied for 13th last year in its first season in the MIAA.

“Obviously we didn’t have the type season we wanted last year so it’s no surprise we’re that low, but it really doesn’t matter,” said head coach Nick Bobeck. “We’re just ready to get to work and our players are excited about the season.”

Defending champion Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri tied for first in the coaches’ poll, finishing with 159 points after each received six first-place votes. Pittsburg State (Kan.) earned the other two first-place votes and came in third with 145 points, followed by Central Missouri, Lindenwood, Washburn, Emporia State, Fort Hays State, Missouri Southern, UCO, Northeastern State, Nebraska-Kearney, Southwest Baptist and Lincoln.

The Bearcats and Griffons each had 10 first-place votes in the media poll, but NWMSU came in six points ahead to earn the favorite’s tag in that poll. PSU was third, followed by WU, Lindenwood, UCM, ESU, MSSU, FHSU, NSU, UCO, UNK, SBU and Lincoln.

The Bronchos will play a 10-game schedule this season, all against league opponents. UCO will host Missouri Western, Pittsburg State, Central Missouri, Emporia State and Lincoln while visiting Northwest Missouri, Washburn, Missouri Southern, Northeastern State and Southwest Baptist.

Central Oklahoma begins practice Aug. 12 and opens the season Sept. 5 at MSSU.
