MUSTANG — Down by a point going into the fourth quarter Kevin Korstjens’ No. 3-ranked Edmond North Lady Huskies didn’t panic on the road at Mustang on Monday night. Instead they turned up the defensive pressure and got the ball into Elizabeth Donohoe, who had a career night, winning 59-43.
Donohoe finished with an astonishing 32 points and tied her own school record with 18 rebounds.
“For some reason they didn’t play behind her and our guards did a good job of recognizing that and kept feeding her the ball,” Korstjens said.
The Lady Huskies (16-2) owned the glass, out-rebounding the Lady Broncos 14-4 on the offensive side and 36-21 for the game. Which in turn kept North in the game. The Lady Huskies shot just 24 percent from the field in the first half.
North trailed 38-37 going into the fourth quarter before outscoring Mustang 22-5.
Mustang, who struggled to an 0-6 start, has won eight of its last 11 since Christmas break.
“They are much better, they can shoot it. Any time you go to their place it’s going to be a battle,” Korstjens said. “I thought we really took care of the ball, and we got stops late defensively which allowed us to pull away.”
“This team has really learned how to win games. We have faced about every type of team out there. Teams in our conference that are as big or bigger than us, teams like Anadarko that are basically five guards. We’ve seen about everything out there.”
TaNita Dewberry had a big game as well, finishing with 15 points and six rebounds, and Anna Kimsey had five points, five rebounds.
The Lady Huskies host Choctaw tonight at 6:30.
