EDMOND — Yukon has been a difficult place for Edmond North over the years, but that wasn’t the case for Kevin Korstjens squad on Friday night as they down the Lady Millers 51-39.
And if you are a fan of defensive basketball, then Yukon was the place to be. North’s defense held Yukon to just five points in the first half.
“That’s one of the two things that we hang our hat on,” Korstjens said. “I think we did an excellent job of not putting them on the free throw line, and not giving up rebounds. We had a bit of a letdown in the fourth, but they were still pressing and stuff like that.”
Elizabeth Donohoe had another big game for the No. 2-ranked Lady Huskies (19-2), scoring 15 points and pulling down 18 rebounds. Anna Kimsey had 10 points in the win, while Emily Davis had 10 points and six boards. Kelsey Philhower finished with eight points and Jennifer Lee had seven points.
“Emily has been playing a lot of big minutes for us over this stretch. We always knew she could do things defensively, but ever since we played Memorial she has come into her own offensively, and that has been a big help to us,” Korstjens said.
It’s helped North get into a really good position heading into the final week of the regular season. With Santa Fe’s loss to Choctaw, their matchup on Tuesday night will be for the Metro Conference championship.
Santa Fe and North will battle at the Siberian Gym on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
