EDMOND —
The No. 2-ranked Edmond North girls don’t have to look far for inspiration as they open the playoffs tonight. Last year, many of the same girls saw a promising season come a premature end as they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by Claremore. But Austin Risenhoover is confident his Lady Huskies squad won’t let it happened again.
“This year we’re a little more mature after starting five or six freshman last season,” North trainer Austin Risenhoover. “That experience and knowing that it can all be taken away in one game has made us a lot better.”
The Lady Huskies title run starts tonight as they host Norman North at 6 p.m. While the Timberwolves have several standouts, Risenhoover doesn’t believe they can stack up with the North girls.
“I know they have some decent players, but from a team standpoint we’re better team,” Risenhoover said. “Teams need to watch out for us because we’re going to do what we do no matter who we’re playing.”
Since losing to Nerinx Hall (Mo.) in the first round of the Bishop Kelly Tournament, the Lady Huskies have reeled off 10 straight wins. They have gotten stellar play from goalie Hayley Harryman, who has nine shutouts this season, and a balanced scoring attack.
A victory by the Lady Huskies could set up an Edlam showdown in the second round. Memorial is also at home against Putnam City North with the winner player meet up with North or Norman North in the second round.
State-runner up Santa Fe has tough road ahead as they travel to top-ranked Jenks for a rematch of last year’s state finals.
In Class 5A, the defending state champion Deer Creek girls hosts Durant in the first round at 6 p.m. The No. 2-ranked Lady Antlers have just one loss in 5A this season as they dropped an overtime contest with Bishop McGuinness.
