EDMOND —
The Oklahoma Christian Academy Eagles girls’ basketball team, returning from a dominant 20-7 season under head coach Elzie Clark where they advanced to the Class A regionals, will be looking to continue their winning ways this season with an intact team, losing only one senior to graduation from last year.
“We had one girl graduate, and we’ve got everyone else back, so we’re pretty excited about the year,” Clark said.
Led by a trio of seniors — Maryn Kingsley, Ko-Jou Huang and 6-foot-2 Courtney Payne, who recently signed on with the University of Oklahoma rowing team — the Eagles are a high-powered scoring machine thus far into the season, going 2-0 after defeating Maysville and Geary by a combined score of 151-51, scoring 70 or more points in both contests.
“We have speed, we preach togetherness, that’s kind of a theme for our community,” Clark said. “We pressure, and we have a group of girls that have been together for a long time, playing together since the third or fourth grade.”
Junior Taylor Estep, one of Vype Magazine’s top 100 girls’ basketball players in the state, averaged 17 points a game to lead the Eagles last season. Kingsley and junior Addison Martin also return after contributing 10 or more points per game on average.
“We have a lot of pieces,” Clark said. “Girls coming off the bench are playing hard, it is a total group effort comprised of girls that have been there for awhile. They all take pride in the defensive end and they really get after it, so that is exciting to watch.”
The Eagles’ dominance defensively shows on the court, having not allowed more than 30 points against thus far in the season.
According to MaxPreps.com, OCA is ranked seventh in Class A, only behind undefeated teams with more games under their belt.
The Lady Eagles will open their home schedule Nov. 27 when they host the Cashion Wildcats. Homecoming is scheduled for Jan. 11, when the Eagles host the Firehawks of Harding Fine Arts Academy.
