OKLA. CITY —
On June 14, Edmond’s Dillon Rust won a professional tournament at the Buffalo Run Prairie Moon Casino’s Classic in Miami with a 67-64 and a 1-stroke win over Trey Herring and Derek Tolan.
A week later at Bel Mar Golf Club in Norman, the Edmond Santa Fe/University of Central Oklahoma graduate won on the Adams Tour again, this time bagging $16,000 for the victory. He trailed Stanford graduate Andrew Yun by 3 shots heading into the final 18 June 21 before flipping the tables for a 3-stroke conquest.
At the start of July, Rust skimmed Edmond resident Rhein Gibson 138-139 to champion the Oklahoma Golf Association’s Pro Series #1 at Gaillardia Golf & Country Club.
Rust shot 72-66 to Gibson’s 71-68.
Gibson, who played collegiately at Oklahoma Christian, placed fourth in the Australian Open in December thus solidifying a spot in the British Open July 17 at Royal Liverpool (Hoylake).
Gibson was a four-time NAIA All-America first-team selection (2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008) at OC. He won four individual titles — the third-highest total in school history — while helping the Eagles to a pair of runner-up finishes and a pair of third-place team showings at the NAIA Championship.
He won the Oklahoma state amateur title and was named as the Oklahoma state amateur Player of the Year in 2008. He also set a world scoring record by shooting a 55 at River Oaks Golf Club in Oklahoma City in May 2012.
