Featured sports organization of the week: Oklahoma Charge
EDMOND — Editor’s Note: Each week the Sun will profile an organization participating in the Edmond Sun Community Sports Desk. The Edmond Community Sports Desk can be found at edmondsun.ok.oursportscommunity.com
The Oklahoma Charge volleyball team was originally formed 10 years ago as a way to strengthen the program at Heritage Hall High School, but has grown dramatically since. The club, which now includes girls from as far away as Bartlesville, Clinton and Tulsa, also fields teams in south Oklahoma City and El Reno with plans for more expansion in the future.
The growth has come a product of the Charge’s incredible success on the court. The program is now the largest in the state and since its inception has had more success than any others in the state.
The 18-1 Charge squad, which feature three PrepVolleyball.com All-Americans, ranked in the top 50 national preseason poll and should soon move into the top 30.
The Oklahoma Charge has several missions. The first is to grow our youth into being the best they can be — both on and off the court. They learn very valuable life lessons by being part of a team including sportsmanship, leadership, strong work ethic and strong values to name a few. The girls also learn to be the best volleyball players they can be.
Players that go through our program and want to play in college almost always get an opportunity to do so. We have two full time recruiting coordinators that assist these girls in the process.
In addition to practices and tournament play, Oklahoma Charge offers members many camps and clinics — some are specialized and are run by former University of Oklahoma All-Americans. The club has also recently started programs for less fortunate kids, providing those children an opportunity to be part of a highly successful program.
