EDMOND — The No. 2-ranked Edmond North girls kept their state tournament hopes alive as they topped defending Class 6A state champion Del City 60-41 in Saturday’s regional championship at the Siberian Gym.
“Del City is a real physical team, they’re real aggressive on the boards but we did great a great job and out-rebounded them by 12 today,” North coach Kevin Korstjens said. “I was just pleased with effort from tip to final buzzer.”
The Lady Huskies will head to the area tournament where they’ll face rival Santa Fe on Thursday night. The North girls have yet to beat the Lady Wolves falling in both meetings this season.
“The game against Santa Fe is going to be a lot like this one today,” Korstjens said. “They’re a very aggressive team and we’re going to need to come out with the same focus and effort and be ready for round three.”
Elizabeth Donohoe paced North with 22 points and eight rebounds. TaNita Dewberry scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Anna Kimsey also finished in double figures with 11 points.
North took a three-point lead at the end of the first, but held Del City to just four points in the second to take a commanding 31-15 halftime lead.
The home team never slowed down in the second half as they outscored the Lady Eagles 29-26 to earn the regional crown.
