Sooner Sports Minute: 14 named to Academic team

NORMAN — Led by offensive lineman Gabe Ikard, 14 Oklahoma players were named to the 2012 Academic All-Big 12 team the conference announced Thursday. The Sooners had 11 first-team selections and three second-team selections and was tied for first among Big 12 Conference members with the 11 first-team honors.

Ikard, who carries a 4.0 grade point average in multidisciplinary studies, was one of just three Big 12 football players with a 4.0 GPA named to the team. The honor marks the third consecutive year the OU center was named to the team with a 4.0.

Other first-team members include quarterback Blake Bell (communication), linebacker/fullback Jaydan Bird (business management), linebacker Daniel Franklin (adult and higher education), kicker Michael Hunnicutt (management), offensive tackle Lane Johnson (human relations), defensive lineman David King (human relations), defensive lineman Jamarkus McFarland (human relations), fullback Trey Millard (psychology), defensive back Julian Wilson (communication) and offensive lineman Austin Woods (management).

The award was the third straight year for first-team honors for Bird, Franklin and McFarland. Johnson, Millard, Wilson and Woods all made the first team for the second year in a row.

Hunnicutt and King were both named to the second team last season.

Second-team members included offensive lineman Bronson Irwin (criminology), defensive back Gabe Lynn (African-American studies) and linebacker Corey Nelson (communication).

First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, players must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests.
