EDMOND —
Edgar Miraku has been tabbed as Central Oklahoma’s head volleyball coach, returning to the school where he served as an assistant coach and earned two degrees before embarking on a sensational high school career.
Miraku has been head coach at Edmond Memorial the last seven years, guiding the Bulldogs to a phenomenal 205-48 record and four Class 6A state championships. He’s also been head coach of the United States Men’s Sitting National Team the past two years, a position he will relinquish when he takes over at UCO.
“I’m certainly excited to once more become part of the UCO family and the Broncho volleyball program,” Miraku said. “It’s extra special to me personally, having been at UCO before and also because it’s my alma mater. I look forward to working with the student-athletes and building on the tradition that has already been established.”
Miraku takes over for Jeff Boyland, who resigned on Nov. 29 after nine years at the helm to become Assistant Director of Sport and Recreation at the UCO Wellness Center.
“Edgar has a great track record of success and we’re thrilled to have him back on campus with us,” UCO athletic director Joe Muller said. “He’s obviously familiar with our program and knows what it will take to succeed at a high level.”
Miraku played professional volleyball in his native Albania for four years and was a member of the Albanian Junior National Team from 1992-95, winning a silver medal in the 1993 Balkan Championships.
He came to the United States in 1995 and immediately joined the UCO program, serving as a student assistant, graduate assistant and volunteer assistant for Mark Herrin for five years while earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
Miraku founded the Oklahoma Peak Performance (OP2) junior club team in 2000 and has served as head coach ever since, going 58-18 in 2002-03 and finishing third in the nation in 2009.
He took over the reigns of the Edmond Memorial program in 2005 and won the first of his four state titles that season, with the Bulldogs also taking the gold ball in 2007, ’09 and ’10. Memorial went 25-9 and made it to the state tournament semifinals last fall.
Miraku has also been actively involved for many years with the U.S. Men’s Sitting National Team and took over as head coach in January 2010, taking the team to the 2010 World Championships, the 2010 World Cup and the 2011 Continental Cup.
Edgar is married (Amy) and has two children (Abiana and Arden).
