SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Casy Rowell’s major decision at 133 pounds started a seven-match winning streak that gave Central Oklahoma a 26-12 victory over Wisconsin-Parkside in the consolation finals of the NWCA Division II National Duals here Sunday afternoon.
The No. 3-ranked Bronchos lost the opening match before Rowell’s 10-2 rout gave UCO the lead right back and started a string of seven straight wins that secured the third-place finish.
“I’m glad we came back and got third, that’s what we should do after a loss,” said UCO coach David James, whose team fell to Notre Dame 19-13 in Sunday’s semifinals. “It was a pretty successful weekend for us and we did a lot of good things, but there was also some disappointment that we didn’t win the event.”
Rowell capped a perfect 4-0 weekend with his major decision, racking up four takedowns in his 13th straight win that gave UCO a 4-3 lead after Ryan Brooks dropped a tight 4-3 decision at 125.
Trison Graham had a reverse, takedown and near-fall in the third period of a 9-2 win at 141 and Jordan Basks followed with a second-period fall. It was the fourth bonus-point win of the weekend for Basks, who pinned Dan Argueta in 4:19.
Cory Dauphin broke open a tight match with a seven-point assault in the third period to earn a 10-2 major decision at 157 and Chris Watson used a late three-point near-fall to break a tie and earn a 5-2 triumph at 165.
Kelly Henderson had a pair of first-period takedowns and continued the streak with a 7-3 win and Tanner Keck pushed UCO’s lead to 26-3 with a dramatic last-second rally at 184. Keck was awarded a penalty point with 10 seconds left when Matt Gille locked his hands and then got a reverse with three ticks remaining to pull out a 4-3 victory.
The Rangers won the final two matches to arrange the final score.
The Bronchos, now 4-1 on the season, return home to host Nebraska-Kearney at 7 p.m. Thursday.
