UCO's Rowell makes MIAA Wrestler of the Week

Special to The Sun

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Central Oklahoma’s Casy Rowell has been named Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Wrestler of the Week for the second time this season, the conference office announced Monday.

The junior 133-pounder from Duncan had another dominating week as the Bronchos wrapped up the MIAA dual championship with league road wins over Truman State and Central Missouri followed by a home sweep of non-conference foes Ouachita Baptist and Colorado State-Pueblo.

The No. 3-ranked Rowell collected a technical fall and three major decisions last week, outscoring his four opponents 59-10 while not allowing an offensive point.  Rowell is 27-3 on the season and has won 21 consecutive matches.

UCO, 12-1 in duals, will host the MIAA Wrestling Championships Sunday at Hamilton Field House.  First-round action gets underway at 10 a.m. and the tournament will run straight through, with the finals set to start at approximately 2:30 p.m.

No. 3 UCO wrestling takes two wins

Jordan Basks and Casy Rowell had dominating afternoons to continue lengthy winning streaks and fuel Central Oklahoma to a pair of victories Saturday at Hamilton Field House.

Basks scored two falls and Rowell had a pair of major decisions as the No. 3-ranked Bronchos downed No. 20 Ouachita Baptist 26-13 and Colorado State-Pueblo 39-5. Basks stretched his winning streak to 17 straight, while Rowell has now won 21 in a row.

UCO improved to 12-1 and has won nine straight duals since its lone loss of the season. It was also the 13th consecutive home win for the Bronchos.

“We looked pretty good in spots, but there’s still a lot of little things we need to work on and clean up,” head coach David James said. “It’s that time of the season where we have to stay focused on doing every thing the right way.

“I thought we competed hard and it was a tough week with four duals in four days along with a lot of travel, so it was good to finish up with two good wins.”

UCO took seven of 10 matches from OBU and followed with eight wins against the Thunderwolves, making the Bronchos 51-9 in individual matches in their last six duals.

Basks had the lone fall in the opener against the Tigers, pinning Sawyer Smith in 4:57 of their 149-pound match. Rowell had three takedowns and a near-fall in a 10-2 major decision at 133.

Cody Dauphin racked up four takedowns in a 10-1 major decision at heavyweight and the  Bronchos also got wins from 157 Cory Dauphin, 165 Zach Aylor, 174 Kelly Henderson and 197 Znick Ferrell.

Third-ranked Cory Dauphin had the biggest win of that group with a 8-1 triumph over No. 4 Bobby Williams. Dauphin took a 2-1 lead on a takedown with nine seconds left in the second period, made it 3-1 with an escape early in the third and then pulled away on a five-point move with 45 seconds remaining.

Basks picked up his ninth fall of the season in the CSU-Pueblo rout, sticking Larry Schmueser a second ahead of the first-period buzzer.

Ben Morgan added a second-period pin at 141, breezing to a 6-0 lead after one period before reversing Adam Ortivez to his back and getting the fall 14 seconds into the second stanza.

Chris Watson recorded four near-falls in a 17-2 technical fall at 165 and Rowell piled up seven takedowns in a 21-8 romp to pick up his ninth straight bonus-point win.

The Bronchos also got a disqualification victory from Cory Dauphin, with Henderson and Ferrell adding regular decisions. UCO’s two losses both came in overtime.

Central will be off until hosting the Mid-America Intercollegiate Conference Wrestling Championships next Sunday.
