North teams win heart-stoppers against Yukon

EDMOND — The Edmond North girls and boys basketball teams took last-second victories from Yukon at home Tuesday night.

The Lady Huskies got 17 points from Kaitlyn Peterson as they defeated the Millerettes 37-34.

After playing to a 17-17 tie to end the first half, North scored early in the third quarter to build a 26-21 lead. The Lady Huskies would not relinquish that lead going into the final frame, despite a Yukon offense that outscored North 13-11 in the quarter.

North worked inside to sisters Courtney and Brittny Dike, and got mid-range shots and fast break points from Peterson to keep the Millerettes on their heels defensively.

The Lady Huskies found themselves up 34-33 with about 30 seconds left. The teams exchanged fouls, and both teams hit the front side of their 1-and-1 to make the score 35-34. After North missed the back end of their 1-and-1, the Millerettes drove down court and had a shot to take the lead, but Peterson got a hand in the Yukon shooter’s face, avoided the foul call and snatched the rebound. She was fouled with .5 seconds left and then hit both free-throws to ice the game.

The North boys also found themselves tied with Yukon heading into the second half of play Tuesday night at the Siberian Gym.

The Millers rode their 3-point shooting to a 25-25 first-half tie, hitting six shots from beyond the arc in the first two quarters. North countered with a pair of treys from Ed Baker and one from Blake Ruben, and got points from David Montgomery, Myles Mukes and Austin Usery to keep it even at the end of two.

The Huskies got aggressive in the second half, holding Yukon to just three field goals and going to the free throw line nine times in the third quarter. They outscored the Millers 13-9 and led 38-34 going into the fourth.

In the final quarter, Yukon got points from five players and was able to cut the North lead. The Huskies were up 49-48 with 10.6 seconds left after Yukon missed the first half of a 1-and-1. North’s David Montgomery drew a foul and hit one free throw. North led 50-48 with just seconds left when Yukon’s Tanner Deckard drove inside and got a shot up between two Huskies that bounced on the rim and fell into the basket as the buzzer sounded, sending the game into overtime.

The extra frame belonged to the Huskies, as they allowed only one Yukon field goal. Tyler Sanders and Ruben combined to go 5-for-8 from the free-throw line, Montgomery hit one bucket and Ed Baker got an open layup after a steal by Usery to bring in the 61-53 Husky win.

The Edmond North teams will visit Putnam City North on Friday.
