YUKON —
The Edmond North wrestlers flexed their muscles late, but again saw their hopes of a Class 6A dual state title end in the semifinals.
The Huskies needed wins in the final four matches to rally past Broken Arrow. Hunter Smith, Lance and Joel Dixon delivered three of them, but the Tigers wouldn’t let the Huskies get another.
Seth Calvert withstood a strong push from Ragan Land, before earning a fall in the second period to clinch the 35-24 semifinal win Saturday afternoon at Yukon High School.
Andrew Dixon opened the dual with a fall at 220 pounds and Nolan Malloy added a 3-2 decision at heavyweight, giving North an early 9-0 lead.
After briefly surrendering the lead, the Huskies climbed back on top with wins from Josh Breece and Hunter Bright. Breece squeezed out a 3-2 win the fourth overtime period, and Bright added a 9-2 decision at 126, making it a 15-10 score.
The Tigers answered with bonus points in the next three bouts to regain the lead for good.
The Huskies kicked off the tournament with a surprisingly easy 44-15 win over Sand Springs.
“We won 11 of 14 matches and I thought it’d be a little closer than that,” North head coach Andy Schneider said.
Andrew Dixon started off the dual with a 15-0 technical fall at 195 pounds. Land, who lost twice to Kyler Childers earlier this season, pulled out a 5-3 decision against the Sandite 220-pounder in the second match of the quarterfinal dual.
Sand Springs got a fall from heavyweight Joey Tilson, but North went on to win seven of the next eight matches to ice the dual victory.
Breece and Austin Cunningham pulled out big wins at 120 and 126. Lance Dixon earned a fall 170 pounds, and Joel Dixon finished it off with a 5-1 decision at 182.
Memorial also made a trip to dual state, but couldn’t pull the upset against Tulsa Union in the opening round.
Ry Huff and Ryley West gave the Bulldogs an early boost with falls at 220 and 285 pounds, but their hopes took a hit with forfeits at 106, 120 and 126. The Redskins later added five pins and rolled to the 57-21 win in the opening round.
“They are a great team and our guys didn’t submit to any of them,” Memorial coach Darren Huff said. “We went out there, wrestled them and tried to beat them. And I was proud of our guys because it’s not always easy to do that.”
Jonah Moore snapped a five-match win streak by Union with an 8-2 win at 138 pounds. Alec Warren added a fall at 3:13 in the 145-pound match.
The Redskins went on to edge Broken Arrow in the 6A state finals, 31-30.
