EDMOND —
City wrestlers made themselves at home Saturday night and will feel the same way this weekend at State Fair Arena. Edmond qualified 14 wrestlers for state, including four regional champions during the Class 6A West regional meet at Santa Fe High School.
North led the way with nine state qualifiers including four regional champions. Memorial qualified three while host Santa Fe will send two to the state tournament.
“It was a pretty good day to get nine guys to state and take second as a team,” North coach Andy Schneider said.
Senior Hunter Bright brought home the Huskies’ first gold when he held off Choctaw’s Frank Smith in the 132-pound finals, winning a 1-0 decision.
“That’s awesome for Hunter to win that,” Schneider said. “He’s a senior so it’s always good to see him peaking at the right time. And he’s a three-time state placer so his goal is to finally come away with some hardware.”
North added three more titles with the help of the Dixon boys. Lance Dixon used a late takedown to knock off Brock Warren of Broken Arrow, 5-1, in the 170-pound finals. Joel Dixon followed suit with a 5-2 decision against Santa Fe’s Walter Smith and Andrew Dixon scored a fall in the third period against Westmoore’s Solomon Vanover at 195 pounds.
The Huskies had three others reach the finals. Cy Trindle (106), Josh Breece (120) and Derek White (145) each finished regional runner-up, while Hunter Smith took third at 160 pounds and Jordan Armstrong took fourth at 113 pounds.
Despite the strong showing, the Huskies couldn’t overtake Broken Arrow for the regional title. The Tigers crowed five individual champions and took the regional team title with 251 points. North was runner-up with 216, Santa Fe finished sixth with 106 and Memorial was eighth with 93.
Memorial came away with three qualifiers, but might only send two to the state meet. Ry Huff suffered a thumb injury due to an illegal move by Westmoore’s John Finn in Friday’s semifinals. He was unable to compete in the 220-pound finals Saturday and his status is still uncertain, according to Memorial coach Darren Huff.
“Whether he meant to do it or not who knows, but it happened so we have to go with the rule book,” Darren Huff said. “It’s an unfortunate thing, but it’s a more unfortunate thing for my son because he may not get to wrestle at state and this kid will.”
If Ry Huff can’t go on Friday, North senior Ragan Land would be his replacement, after taking fifth Saturday.
Alec Warren, a two-time state runner-up, bounced back from a semifinal loss to earn third at 145 pounds with a 7-0 decision win over Cameron Hoffheimer of Moore. Ashton Stovall also overcame an earlier loss to finish fourth at 106 pounds.
“Alec Warren got upset Friday night and came back and wrestled real well today,” Darren Huff said.
The Wolves took some hard losses in the consolation bracket, but came away with a pair of state qualifiers. Smith gave Joel Dixon a fight in the 195-pound finals, but couldn’t pull out the victory.
“I missed out on state the last two years by a point, so it felt great to seal the deal the first day,” Smith said. “And I wrestled Dixon at Three Dog Night and he got me by three points, but I just need to figure out how I can beat him if I want to get to the finals.”
Brett Dunning will be making his third trip to state, after finishing third at 126 pounds. The junior was pinned by three-time state champion Kyle Garcia of Choctaw in the semifinals, but reeled off a pair of wins Saturday for bronze.
