UCO softball tops Division II preseason pollĀ

Special to The Sun

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Defending NCAA Division II national champion Central Oklahoma is the unanimous No. 1 pick in the 2014 National Fastpitch Coaches Association preseason poll released Wednesday.

The Bronchos, of interim head coach Cody White, received all 16 first-place votes in balloting of head coaches from around the country to finish with 400 points.  Kutztown, the team UCO beat in last year’s title game, came in second with 376 points.

Grand Valley State is third in the top-25 poll, with Humboldt State (Calif.) and Armstrong Atlantic rounding out the top five.

The Bronchos have eight starters back from last year’s 51-11 team that went 9-0 in postseason play to capture the school’s first women’s national title.

Leading those returners are two NFCA All-Region selections in pitcher Kalynn Schrock (34-6 record, 1.69 ERA, 312 strikeouts in 265 innings) and second baseman Ally Dziadula (.355 average, 58 runs scored, 21 RBI). Other returning starters are shortstop Hannah Justus, catcher Tori Collet, outfielders Devyn Frazier, Kaylee Brunson and Brooke Zukerman and utility Sam Cool along with pitcher Amanda McClelland.

The Bronchos open the season Feb. 7-9 at the Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas. The Bronchos will play five games in that three-day event, including showdowns with No. 8 West Texas A&M and No. 22 Augustana.
