OKLAHOMA CITY — Warren Spahn Award Gala organizers announced today that Edmond Santa Fe softball player Sierra Bronkey is one of five high school softball players statewide selected as a Ferguson Jenkins Award winner.
Richard Hendricks, president of the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame Museum and board member for the Warren Spahn Award Gala, said the Oklahoma Coaches Association selects winners based on athletic and scholastic achievement.
“These individuals are selected as award winners because they will likely continue Oklahoma’s national status as a producer of great ball players. They are of high character, and their coaches identify them as leaders, both athletically and scholastically.”
Bronkey, who led the Lady Wolves to the state tournament for the third time in her career, hit .432 with 10 home runs and 37 RBI, while going 14-8 with a 1.12 ERA and 129 strikeouts in the circle as a senior.
The 2009 All-Edmond Softball Player of the Year said she is looking forward to accepting the award on January 26th at the Warren Spahn Award Gala, which will also honor New York Yankees Pitcher CC Sabathia as the 2009 Warren Spahn Award winner.
“When I found out I got this award, I felt accomplished,” Bronkey said. “It’s really an honor to be picked out of all the talent we have in the state. I appreciate everyone who thought I deserved this award.”
The Ferguson Jenkins Awards are presented annually to 10 outstanding high school baseball and softball players and an outstanding baseball and softball coach.
Other softball winners were Moore’s Sydney Garcia, Amanda McClelland of Lawton McArthur, Ashley Paxton from Mustang and Broken Arrow’s Jessica Turner.
The baseball coach honoree is Eddie Collins of Latta High School and the softball coach honoree is Randall King of Broken Arrow.
The Ferguson Jenkins Awards are presented to honor Baseball Hall of Famer Ferguson Jenkins, who helped establish the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame Museum in 1992.
The Ferguson Jenkins Awards will be presented at the Warren Spahn Award Gala on January 26 at the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame & Jim Thorpe Museum in Oklahoma City. The gala is hosted by the Jim Thorpe Association, Bricktown Rotary Club and Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame Museum.
New York Yankees Pitcher CC Sabathia is the headliner award recipient as winner of the Warren Spahn Award, presented annually to the best left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball.
