The Edmond North swimmers got comfortable sitting next to the announcers table at the Edmond City Championships. The Huskies earned the priority after winning the championship last season, and had no intentions of giving that back this year.
North edged out Memorial and Santa Fe for their second-consecutive Edmond City Championship Monday night at Oklahoma Christian University. The Huskies won with 904 total points, while Memorial placed second with 828 points and Santa Fe came in third with 243 points.
Edmond head coach Steve Riggs was pleased with the event but was unhappy with some slower than usual finishes by the Edmond swimmers.
"It was the good and the bad of it, a lot of the times we swam weren't good, last week's weather probably had something to do with it,"ù Riggs said. "We didn't get in all the training in we usually do and it's difficult to have a meet on a Monday after a weekend."
Riggs commended his swimmers for their competitive nature that created an electric atmosphere.
"I told them that no matter how good of friends they are with the other kids, that for a couple of hours they have to be mortal enemies and swim for their schools and we saw a lot of that tonight."
Girls
The Lady 'Dogs grabbed eight first place finishes and won the girls championship with 477 points. North came in second place with 436 and Santa Fe was third with 137.
Samantha Woodward was her usual dominating self Monday night, winning two individual and two relay events.
"She(Woodward) is in a class by herself, and it's difficult for her to get a lot of competition here, but she is a good leader and did a good job of that tonight,"ù Riggs said.
Woodward won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:18.53, the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:09.28, and was a part of the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams. Joining her on the 200 medley team was Megan Hatfield, Rachel Prince and Kaitlin Kliewer. Woodward anchored the 400 freestyle team that place first with a time of 4:53.44. Her relay teammates included Aubry Midkiff, Jill Enge and Kliewer.
Enge also had an impressive night winning the 400 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, in addition to her part of the 400 freestyle relay team. Enge set a school record for the 400 freestyle with a time of 4:53.44.
Prince also won the 50 freestyle with a time of 29.15 and the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:05.45.
North's Katie Sabatino won the 100 butterfly and helped the 200 freestyle relay team take first place. The relay team of Sabatino, Justinn Hamby, Joy-Lee Stowe and Rachel Watson placed first with a time of 2:06.17.
Crista Riggs grabbed the lone first place finish for Santa Fe. The sophomore won the 200 IM with a time of 2:50.49.
Boys
The North boys won big over their Edlam competition. The Huskies won the championship with 468 points. Memorial was second with 351, despite winning eight out of the 11 events. Santa Fe came in a distant third place with 76 points.
The Huskies got first place finishes from senior Nathan Bercaw, George Hirka and freshman Ryan Adams.
Bercaw won big in the 200 meter freestyle with a time of 2:05.24. Hirka won the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.21, in front of teammate Forrest Jennings at 27:03. Adams placed first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.80.
Danny Hatfield was the 'Dogs top swimmer. The sophomore broke a pair of school records in the 400 freestyle and 100 backstroke. His time of 101:51 shattered a 26-year old record of 103:10 set by Frank Eckhart in 1981.
"It made it all these years and he (Hatfield)knew that's what we were trying for on that race and he really came through with a great swim,"ù Riggs said.
Hatfield broke the 400 freestyle record with a time of 4:18.97.
Hatfield was also part of Memorial's winning teams in the 200 medley and 200 and 400 freestyle relays. The team of Hatfield, Nick Welch, Phil Matt and Daniel Enge opened the meet by edging North for the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:56.28.
Hatfield joined Enge, Phil and Augie Peterson to again win a close race against the Huskies in the 400 freestyle relay. Peterson anchored the team and edged out North's Adam by 1.21 seconds to win the event with a time of 3:49.49.
The team of Welch, Enge, Davis and Matt won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:46.37.
Welch also won the 200 IM and the 100 meter backstroke.
The Edmond squads are off for the Christmas break, but they will be back in action on Jan. 8 against Stillwater for senior night.
