Locals garner gold at Central American Games

UCO-based U.S. men's sitting volleyball team wins gold medal

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica — The University of Central Oklahoma-based U.S. Men’s Sitting Volleyball Team brought home the gold medal Saturday at Central American Games for Sitting Volleyball in San Jose, Costa Rica with a 25-14, 27-25, 25-12 win over Colombia in the final.

Team USA finished the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record without losing a single set.

"It was great to see the team perform well enough to not only win the Central American Games gold medal but do it without losing a set," said Edgar Laforest, who joined the team on Saturday to replace Central resident athlete Eric Duda of Edmond, who had to leave due to professional responsibilities.

Central resident athlete Dan Regan, also of Edmond, led the U.S. in scoring Saturday with 10 points on six kills, three blocks and one ace. Central resident athlete J. Dee Marinko of Edmond tallied eight points on three kills, three blocks and one ace.

Head coach Bill Hamiter’s starting lineup included Marinko and Laforest at setter/outside hitter, Central resident athlete Charlie Swearingen of Edmond and Regan at middle hitter and Thomas Davis and Rejy Bacchus at right site hitter.

The U.S. will take a short break before leaving for Montreal April 25 where they will play exhibition matches against Canada April 26-28.

Central became an official U.S. Olympic Training Site in July 2009, and has been an official U.S. Paralympic Training Site since 2005. At Central, athletes can train for Olympic volleyball and archery and any Paralympic sport.
