Special to The Sun
Thanks to a helping hand from neighboring Deer Creek, the Edmond North Huskies captured the championship of the Yellowjacket Invitational track and field meet at Choctaw April 4.
Going into the final event of the day — the 1600 meter relay — North held a narrow 146-141 lead over eastside power Booker T. Washington of Tulsa. The Hornets had the best time in the state going into the final event and a first-place finish would hand them the championship if the Huskies were third.
Instead, the Antlers pulled ahead on the anchor leg to post a 3:30.10 while the Hornets were second in 3:30.31. While the 20 points pulled Deer Creek into third place in the meet, the runner-up 16 points gave Tulsa Washington 157, one point less than the champion Huskies, who picked up 12 points in the final race to tally 158 and claim the championship trophy.
The feature race of the day did not disappoint as Deer Creek’s defending state champion 110 meter hurdler Landon Huslig was on hand to defend his title and top ranking in the state.
However, North’s Mark Sharpton pulled off a mild upset as he nipped Huslig at the tape to win the event in a time of 14.92 with Huslig right behind with a 14.98 clocking. Huslig had no trouble winning the 300 hurdles, posting a 38.95 with North’s Reagan Harris second at 41.34.
North also picked up 40 points by winning both the 400 meter and 3200 meter relay races.
In addition to winning the 1600 meter relay, Deer Creek again proved the Antlers can run with the big boys as they were third in the 400, 800 and 3200 relays.
