SURPRISE, Ariz. — The Super Seniors tennis squad representing Oklahoma, a group of 11 netters playing out of Oak Tree, became the first team from Oklahoma to ever make the USTA national finals April 21.

The team, comprised of athletes 60 and over, fell to the Pacific Northwest region winner (Oregon) 0 & 3, but it was the No. 1 doubles duo of Ron Brewer and Bob Thompson who upended the favorite Florida to propel Oklahoma into the national title game. Thompson lives in Oklahoma City and Brewer is from Tulsa.

The tennis team, with four players from Edmond, defeated Philadelphia 2 & 1 in the opening round of the USTA Nationals in Surprise, Ariz. and toppled the Southwest region 2 & 1 in round two. The Oak Tree group then dropped Northern California before the big upset over Florida in the semifinals.

In order to win the Oklahoma title, the athletes defeated Tulsa and then won the Missouri Valley regional in September in Springfield, Mo. to qualify for nationals.
