Sabathia named Warren Spahn Award winner

GUTHRIE - National Baseball Hall of Famer Warren Spahn’s legacy as the winningest lefty pitcher ever continues in Carsten Charles Sabathia-- the 2007 Warren Spahn Award winner as the best left-handed starting pitcher in the majors.

Sabathia, 27, and known as “C.C.,” became the youngest pitcher since Greg Maddux to reach 100 wins in his last game of the regular season.

The Cleveland Indians’ ace has committed to travel to Oklahoma to receive the award during a gala event Wednesday night at the Masonic Temple Convention Hall in Guthrie.

Sabathia notched career bests in wins (19), ERA (3.21) and strikeouts (209), earning the ninth annual award presented to baseball’s best lefty since 1999 by the Oklahoma Sports Museum in Guthrie.

Wednesday’s event will also honor Purcell-native Joe Allen Simpson, who will receive the seventh annual Bill Teegins Excellence in Sportscasting Award for his work as an Atlanta Braves announcer.

Ten high school athletes, including Oklahoma Christian Academy’s, Cody Painter, will also receive the Oklahoma Sports Museum sponsored Ferguson Jenkins Outstanding Student Athlete Awards at the event.

The ninth annual award presentation program is open to the public. Tickets are $35 and $10 for students under 18. Tickets may be purchased by contacting OSM at (405) 260-1342 or P.O. Box 1342, Guthrie, Okla., 73044.

William Kropp, a 24-year-old rookie from Edmond, managed to hold off local favorite Ángel Cabrera to win the 83rd Abierto OSDE del Centro presented by FiberCorp Sunday.
His victory at the Cordoba Golf Club, in Cabrera’s hometown of Villa Allende, was his first in just five career starts on the NEC Series-PGA TOUR Latinoamérica.
“My plan for the first half of the Tour season was to get adjusted to traveling across the region and playing new courses,” said Kropp, who had finished in a tie for third only three weeks ago in Guatemala. “It’s really a great bonus to win a tournament as important as this one early in the year.”
Kropp finished at 8-under par 276, one shot ahead of the 2007 U.S. Open and 2009 Masters champion. Cabrera was trying to win the tournament for the ninth time in his career and he was also seeking to become the first three-time champion on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica.
