Cimarron splits with Yukon Independence

After a perfect start to the season, the Cimarron Middle School teams split their meeting with Yukon Independence Tuesday night at Edmond Memorial High School.

Cimarron “A” (2-1) could not get any offense going, and lost 22-0 in their matchup with Yukon Independence “A”.

“We didn’t play as intensely as Yukon,” Cimarron coach Darren Huff said. “We had some really good defensive play, but our offense just couldn’t over come their aggressive defense.”

The Panthers defense was led by Sam Rolle, who grabbed an interception, Taylor Hicks, Caleb Caldwell and Jeremy Moran. Offensively, Huff said he was pleased with the hard running of Michael Farmer and Kalan Palmer.

Things went more smoothly for Cimarron “B” (3-0), which used two touchdowns from Caleb McCain to put away Yukon Independence “B”, by a final score of 14-6 Tuesday night.

“We had good effort out of our guys on defense,” Huff said. “Offensively our guys played tough, we moved the ball when things got tough. We made some first downs at crucial times. Our defense put forth outstanding effort to keep them out of the end zone at the end of the game.”

Cimarron’s defense forced three turnovers in the game. Cory Sullivan and Bradley Shaw each recovered Yukon fumbles, and Mitch Johnson had an interception. Amos Ayitey, Joey Martinelli, Justin Ederer, Kenton Bobelu and Kevin Blumenthal also stepped up big for the Panther defense.

McCain put Cimarron on top early when he scored from 33-yards out on the team’s first possession. Collin Ketelsleger added the two-point conversion, making it an 8-0 game.

Yukon got on the board with a touchdown in the second quarter, but failed on the two-point try, making it an 8-6 game.

McCain later put the game away in the fourth quarter, when he scored on a 46-yard run.

Both teams will return to action Tuesday night when they take on Edmond Sequoyah Middle School. The “B” teams will hit the field at 6 p.m., with the “A” game to follow at 7:30 p.m.
