Lady Wolves rally past PC North on senior night

Edmond Santa Fe needed several bags of ice at the end of Thursday night’s contest with Putnam City North. But they had enough gas to rally from a three-run deficit, and top the Panthers 7-4 on senior night.

“We seem to be banged up everywhere and it seems contagious, but at the end of the season you expect that,” Santa Fe coach Rhonda Lawson said. “What I told them was it was early enough and just get a little bit a time, don’t have any more bad innings, and they did that.”

The team said farewell to their two seniors, Evan Gray and Jessica Burkhart. Gray started the game in circle, but left early due injury. Burkhart had an outstanding game, finishing the night 2-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored.

“She told me that was the first time she hit off a left-handed pitcher, how cool is that for a senior,” Lawson said about Burkhart. “What a night at the plate, that was very deserving, what a great kid, she’s been here four years supporting the team.”

Trailing 4-2, the Lady Wolves turned things around late in the ballgame. Sierra Bronkey drove in two runs with an RBI double to right field in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Then Hayden James came up with a big hit in the bottom of the sixth inning. The junior gave Santa Fe the lead when she lined a double to left field, scoring Karly Nevez and Kaylee Humann. Madison Martin tacked on one more run with an RBI single, making it a 7-4 game.

“We left a lot of baserunners throughout the game, but we had some key hits,” Lawson said. “Some people stepping up in key situations, when they could have gone the other way and they stepped up big,”

Bronkey shut down PC North in the seventh inning for the win.

PC North capitalized on a pair Santa Fe errors and pulled in front with a four-run third inning.

Burkhart trimmed the lead to two in the home half of the inning. The senior scored Nevez with a sacrifice fly, making it a 4-2 game.

Bronkey struck out nine and allowed just three runs on three hits for the win.

Null and Nevez were each 2-for-3 at the plate, and James was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

The Lady Wolves and Panthers will square off again today at PC North High School.
