Cimarron upended by Yukon Lakeview

The Cimarron Middle School football team’s trip to Yukon on Tuesday night did not go quite as planned. Both squads came away with losses in the doubleheader with Yukon Lakeview.

The Cimarron “A” team rallied in the second half, but could not overtake Lakeview “A” and fell by 20-16 final

“Our guys really played hard and controlled the second half of the game,” Cimarron head coach Darren Huff said. “We got off to a very slow start but came back and played very well in the second half, so we felt really good about that.”

Lakeview put Cimarron in an early hole with 20 unanswered points in the first half. Cimarron answered back in the second half with a 23-yard touchdown run by Ben Moore. Caleb Caldwell added the two-point conversion, making it a 20-8 game with 3:00 left in the third.

Michael Farmer added the final score of the game when he broke a 30-yard TD run with 5:06 left in the game.

“The boys showed a lot of character by not giving up, they’re a great group of talented players,” Huff said.

Huff said he was pleased with the play of Caldwell, Farmer, Kevin Bluementhal and Moore on defense, and Michael Stran, Mason Hall and Korey Emery each played extremely well on offense.

The Cimarron “B” team did not fare much better. The Lakeview “B” held off the Cimarron squad for a 16-6 win.

“Our guys really played hard on offense, most of the game,” Huff said. “We had some guys step up and play well on defense, we just gave up a long drive that took most of the first half. Our guys played tough.”

Yukon scored on a six-yard run midway through the second quarter and added the two-point conversion, making it an 8-0 game.

Jacob Lewis put the Cimarron on the board with a 70-yard TD with 4:21 in the third, but the two-point try failed.

“Jacob Lewis made some outstanding runs but the offense just didn’t move the ball well enough,” Huff said.

Yukon scored again in the fourth quarter to make it a 16-6 final.

Both squads will be back in action Tuesday night when they travel to Mustang to take on North Middle School. The “B” game is set to start at 4:30 p.m., with the “A” game to follow at 5:30 p.m.
