OKLAHOMA CITY - Dan Cocannouer figured his Edmond Santa Fe squad would be in for a dogfight against No. 7-ranked Putnam City North. But the Wolves coach quickly realized things were not as they seemed.
The No. 9-ranked Wolves proved they could be the class of District 6A-1 when they stuck it to PC North, winning in a 42-14 rout Thursday night at Putnam City Stadium.
“We’ve been talking about how we needed to make some noise, get ourselves going, and the last three weeks our kids have come out and played every ball game,” Cocannouer said. “We knew they were big, we knew they had two good running backs, and we got after them, I’m very happy with the effort and it’s a big time victory for us.”
With the win the Wolves (6-1, 3-1) hold onto second place behind undefeated Mustang.
The Wolves had no trouble stopping the high-powered PC North offense. The two-headed rushing attack of Greg Lewis and Josh Booker were held in check and combined for just 58 yards on 10 carries.
Santa Fe defensive end Trevor Pletcher pestered the PC North offense all night. The Panthers’ line had no answer for Pletcher, who camped out in their backfield and finished with three sacks.
“They were big, but coach Cocannouer prepared us, and we’re just quicker than they are,” Pletcher said. “Daeshon (Bufford) has speed and quickness, and I have speed and strength, so we just compliment each other.”
While the Panthers’ running game never found any traction, the Wolves’ duo of Steven Sumpter and Randy Ponder did not disappoint. Ponder rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries, and Sumpter finished the night with 104 yards on 10 attempts.
Ponder may have gotten the end zone glory, but it was Sumpter who came through with the assists. Sumpter set up his teammates first two scores of the second half with long runs of 32 and 38 yards. Ponder picked up a two-yard run early in the third quarter, and scored again with 11:23 left in the fourth, giving Santa Fe a 35-7 lead.
Sumpter also came up big on special teams. On the opening kickoff, Jordan Mitchell stripped the ball from the PC North returner, and Sumpter scooped it up on the Panthers’ seven-yard line and ran it in for a score.
Michael Hodges was also brilliant. The senior quarterback threw for 159 yards and two touchdowns passes on 13-of-17 passing.
Hodges helped Santa Fe extend its first half lead when he quickly guided the Wolves downfield with just 28 seconds on the clock. He hit Kevin Nowlin on a 17-yard pass and then found Alex Hill in the back of the end zone for a 40-yard TD pass as time expired.
Next week the Wolves head to Lawton to take on the Wolverines.
