Perennial NCAA Division II wrestling powerhouse Central Oklahoma is ranked No. 6 in the preseason poll released this week by the NCAA Division II National Wrestling Coaches Association.
The seven-time Division II champion Bronchos of 27-year head coach David James, who have three All-Americans back from last year’s sixth-place team, earned 121 points in balloting of head coaches from around the country.
“Preseason rankings don’t mean a whole lot and they certainly don’t win any matches for you,” said James, who has led UCO to 12 of its 15 national team titles. “Our goal every year is to win the national championship and we’re working hard to make sure we give ourselves a chance to make that happen.”
Nebraska-Omaha earned the favorite’s role as the No. 1 team, followed by Minnesota State-Manakto, defending champion Nebraska-Kearney, Adams State, Western State and UCO. Click here for the complete team and individual preseason rankings.
Heavyweight Dustin Finn leads three ranked individuals for the Bronchos, coming in No. 1 after a runner-up finish last year. Tim Elliott is ranked fourth at 133 pounds and Colby Robinson is fifth at 149.
UCO will preview the 2008-09 team tonight with its annual Bronze-Blue match, set for 7 p.m. at Hamilton Field House. Oklahoma will also hold an intrasquad dual at the same time and admission is free.
