The No. 8-ranked Edmond North girls basketball team used a 21-4 second quarter run to pull away from a pesky Edmond Memorial J.V. team on Thursday night at Memorial High School, to win 51-37, in its opening round game in The Open Tournament.
“I thought we played well in spurts, we’re still lacking consistency,” North head coach Kevin Korstjens said, after his Lady Husky squad improved to 3-0 on the season.
Elizabeth Donohoe scored 14 points, and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds in the win.
Memorial fought for all four quarters, trailing just 10-8 after the first.
But, Anna Kimsey hit a basket in the opening minute of the second quarter, followed by six-straight points from Donohoe, to quickly widen the gap to 18-10. Following a Lady Bulldog bucket, Caroline Collins drained a three-pointer to make it 21-10 with 3:21 left in the first half.
Donohoe came back with another two-pointer, then Tanita Dewberry added a conventional three-point play as the Lady Huskies led 26-10.
Kimsey added a three-point play with just under a minute left before half, and Natalie Colton hit a layup moments later, as North went into the break with a 31-12 lead.
The Lady ‘Dogs came within 34-21 late in the third quarter, but that was as close as they would get. North put the game away with a 7-0 run midway through the fourth, that happened in less than a minute.
Kimsey hit a pair of free throws with 6:17 remaining, followed by a three-pointer by Colton. Donohoe finished the run with a shot in the paint.
North will meet Santa Fe in an early Edlam battle at 6:30 p.m.
“They’re really athletic, we’re going to have to play well to win,” Korstjens said.
Dewberry finished with eight points and four rebounds, Collins had 10 points, while Kimsey and Colton had six points apiece. Ashley Webb added three points.
