The Edmond North girl’s shooting was a bit off the mark on Friday night, but it did not matter. The No. 8-ranked Lady Huskies showed Stillwater just how stingy their defense can be, as they rolled to a 52-27 win Friday night in Stillwater.
“It was a good win on the road, good way to go into Christmas,” North coach Kevin Korstjens said. “Defense is just one of these things that they take a lot of pride in. If they want to play into February and March they need to buy into it and they are.”
North (6-1) flexed its defensive muscles early, holding Stillwater to five points in the first quarter, and just two in the second. It was the second time in a row the Lady Huskies held their opponent to single digit scoring in the first half. North limited Mustang to just nine points in the first half of Tuesday night’s 59-36 win.
Along with the defensive edge, the Lady Huskies enjoyed a big advantage on the boards, out-rebounding Stillwater 39-17.
“We didn’t shoot the ball well, but we just kept battling on the boards,” Korstjens said.
Elizabeth Donohoe had another solid outing, finishing with a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The sophomore standout got the offense going early in the night, scoring eight points in the first quarter.
Tanita Dewberry then carried the scoring load in the second half. After putting up just two points before the half, Dewberry scored 10 in the second half to put the game away. She also finished the night with eight rebounds.
Anna Kimsey added seven points and two rebounds and Rachel Wood scored six for the Lady Huskies.
The North girls will take off for Christmas break, and will return to action on Jan. 6 against Putnam City North.
