The Edmond North girls took one step toward defending their Ada Tournament title with a 54-10 win over the Ada Junior Varsity team on Thursday afternoon.
The North defense was too much for the Lady Cougars to handle. North took a 35-0 lead at halftime and did not surrender a point until Ada got on the board three minutes into the second half.
“I thought we played extremely solid on the defensive end,” said North coach Kevin Korstjens whose team had 24 steals in the win. “We were just really solid, and it’s fun when you get to play everybody.”
North finished the game with 10 different scorers. Caroline Collins led the Lady Huskies with 14 points, Tanita Dewberry finished with eight and Elizabeth Donohoe chipped in five points.
North will play Ada tonight in the second round of the tournament, with a scheduled tip-off of 7 p.m.
Deer Creek 59, Guthrie 33
The Deer Creek girls swamped Guthrie with their outside shooting and solid defense, and came away with a 59-33 win in the first round of the Chickasha Tournament.
The Lady Antlers came out strong in the first half, and led 32-4 at the break. In the first half, they hit 56 percent from 3-point range, and 60 percent from inside the arc.
Deer Creek will take on the winner of the Putnam City/Chickasha game tonight at 6:30 p.m.
OCS 43, Luther 28
The Oklahoma Christian School girls got off to a hot start and easily put away Luther in the first round of the Wellston Tournament with a 43-28 victory.
“That was probably the best quarter we’ve ever had,” OCS head coach Elizabeth Clower said about her team’s 20-1 lead at the end of the first. “We came back to reality after that and still won big, but had to fight to stay there.”
Freshman Dani Childress led the Lady Saints with 11 points.
OCS will take on Amber Pocasset today in the second round at 4:20 p.m.
Memorial 75, W. Heights 35
The Edmond Memorial girls got back on track Thursday afternoon, knocking off Western Heights 75-35 in the first round of the Chickasha Tournament.
“We started out slow and it took while to get spring in our step, but then did well,” Memorial coach Shane Coffey said.
The Lady Bulldogs had four players finish in double figures. Madison Johnson led the way with 14 points, Katy Allen scored 12, Taylor Anderson finished with 11 and Allie Decker added 10 for Memorial.
Memorial will return to action today when they take on the winner of the Duncan/Southmoore contest.
Santa Fe 37, Bartlesville 33
The Edmond Santa Fe girls overcame some pregame illness and opened the Skiatook Invitational with a 37-33 win over Bartlesville.
“We ate at McDonalds before the game and several girls got sick, but we fought through it and won,” Santa Fe coach Paul Bass said. “
The Lady Wolves take on No. 13-ranked Owasso today at 4:30 p.m.
