Saturday night may have felt like a bit of deja vu for the Edmond North girls. For the second year in a row the No. 8-ranked Lady Huskies (9-2) got the best of Choctaw to win the East Central Classic on Saturday evening in Ada.
Elizabeth Donohoe put forth a dominating performance, scoring 28 points and grabbing 11 points, to lead North to a 53-38 win over Choctaw.
“Last year, we surprised some people by beating Ada and Choctaw, but this year coming in as the No. 1 seed we handled ourselves well,” North coach Kevin Korstjens said.
Donohoe was named the tournament’s most valuable player, while Anna Kimsey scored 11 points and was named to the all-tournament team.
North trailed by three points at the end of the first quarter, but bounced back with some solid defense. The Lady Huskies allowed just 12 points over the next two periods, and led 36-26 at the end of three. North then outscored the Lady Yellowjackets 17-12 in the fourth for the win.
The Lady Huskies advanced to the tournament finals with a 49-47 victory over Ada on Friday.
The North girls return to action tonight when they host Putnam City. They will then travel to Choctaw on Friday night for a rematch with the Lady Yellowjackets.
Memorial 57, Putnam City 49
The Edmond Memorial girls used a big third-quarter effort to push past Putnam City in the finals of the Chickasha Tournament on Saturday evening. The No. 6-ranked Lady ‘Dogs (7-3) led by two points at the break, but outscored Putnam City 18-8 in the third quarter and cruised to a 57-49 win.
Taylor Anderson led Memorial with 13 points, Katy Allen scored 12 and Abi Morrison added nine points.
Memorial will be at home tonight to take on Moore.
OCS 47, CHA 42
The Oklahoma Christian School girls overcame some offensive struggles on Saturday afternoon and pulled out a 47-42 victory over Christian Heritage Academy in their final action of the Wellston Route 66 Shootout.
The Lady Saints (7-2) were held to single-digit scores in each of the first three quarters, before outscoring CHA 21-13 in the four quarter for the comeback win.
“We struggled early with putting the ball in the hoop but stayed consistent with the offensive game plan, and the shots began to fall when Dani Childress hit her first of two threes,” OCS coach Elizabeth Clower said.
Megan Maguire later knocked down a 3-pointer and hit 6 of 8 from the free throw line to boost the OCS offense. The senior finished the game with a team-high 14 points.
Abbey Mauldin also had a strong game for the Lady Saints. The senior finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, two steals and was selected to the all-tournament team.
CHA’s Megan Henson led all scorers with 26 points.
The Lady Saints are back in action tonight when they play at Riverside.
Santa Fe 85, Tulsa NOAH 36
The Tulsa NOAH girls hoped they could slow down Edmond Santa Fe with their press, but the Lady Wolves ran right through it. No. 10 Santa Fe (9-2) closed out the Skiatook Invitational with an 85-36 victory over Tulsa NOAH, which was the team’s highest scoring output since putting up 92 points against Putnam City West three years ago.
“They came out pressing us, they tried the whole game, and that’s one of the reasons we had some many points,” Santa Fe coach Paul Bass said. “We just kept pushing the ball because that’s what we practice, so that was just right up our alley.”
Everyone on the Santa Fe squad scored, including five players who finished in double figures with Jimi Blagowsky leading the way with 16 points. Freshman Courtney Walker scored 10 points in the second half and finished with 12, Lindsey Stanley scored 11 and Britni Pendergrass and Tate Hardaker each chipped in 10 for the Lady Wolves.
Santa Fe led by just a point at the end of the first quarter, but scored more than 20 points in each of the final three periods for the win.
Santa Fe returns to action tonight when they play at No. 9-ranked Putnam City North.
Deer Creek 40, Southmoore 31
The Deer Creek girls defense came up big in Saturday’s contest with Southmoore. The Lady Antlers held Southmoore to just 13 points in the second half and went on to win the third place game of the Chickasha Tournament by a final score of 40-31.
The Lady Antlers were led by Courtney Weaver and A.J. Miller, who scored 10 points apiece in the win.
Deer Creek will return to action tonight when they travel to Piedmont.
