Kevin Korstjens would have liked to see little more from his Edmond North girls, but he couldn’t argue with the end result. The Lady Huskies staved off several rallies from Putnam City and hung on for a 57-47 victory Tuesday night at the Siberian Gym.
“(Putnam City) is a scary team, they shoot the ball well and I thought they played extremely hard,” Korstjens said. “I’d like us to look a little sharper, but it’s a win, we’ll take it.”
Elizabeth Donohoe and Anna Kimsey handled the bulk of North’s scoring load. Donohoe led the way with a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Kimsey finished the night with 17 points.
North came out strong defensively in the first quarter, but was inconsistent the rest of the night.
“We take pride in our defense, being smart and being sound defensively, and we just had several breakdowns tonight where we just weren’t thinking,” Korstjens said.
Putnam City had three players finish in double-figures. Porsche Young led the way with 15 points including a pair of 3-pointers, Desire Bohannan scored 12 off the bench and Camella Thompson finished with 10.
North pounced on the Lady Pirates in the first quarter. Donohoe scored six points in the opening period helping the Lady Huskies take a 13-2 lead after one.
The Putnam City girls answered in the second quarter with help from Young. The junior scored 10 points in the second including a pair of 3-pointers, helping the Lady Pirates pull within seven-point at the half.
The Lady Pirates continued to close the gap in the third quarter. Bohannan hit a layup just before the buzzer sounded, making it a 40--36 game heading into the fourth quarter.
Donohoe made sure things didn’t get any closer in the fourth. The junior scored a couple of quick baskets early in the period, pushing the lead back to double-digits. Rachel Wood and Kimsey each scored on 3-point plays in the fourth and the Lady Huskies hung on for the win.
The North girls return to action Friday night when they travel to Choctaw for a rematch with the Lady Yellowjackets. North topped Choctaw on Saturday night to win the East Central Classic in Ada.
